On February 10th, the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) announced current Autism funding (AFU) would end on March 31, 2027, along with the At Home Program School Aged Extended Therapy program. Both would be replaced with the new Children and Youth with Support Needs Disability Funding Model.
The new model would include two streams: the Benefit, a two tiered direct funding program of $6500 or $17,000; and the Supplement, a direct funding program of up to $6000 tied to family income and eligibility for the Federal Disability Tax Credit, set to begin July 2027.
Unfortunately because of the strict eligibility for the Benefit, and the low income threshold for the Supplement, thousands of children with Autism and other disabilities are set to see a reduction or total loss of individualized therapy funding.
Additionally, MCFD is receiving an influx of $80 million dollars over three years to expand existing public services for children under 6, and start offering public services for children and youth age 6-18. Parents and caregivers are being told these services will be available in place of the individualized therapy funding their children and youth will see reduced, or entirely eliminated. The services will be offered through existing Child Development Centres. The timeline of those services originally said Spring 2028 for children and youth age 6-18, more than a year after they lose or face a reduction in funding. Likewise, the public services do not reach every corner of the Province.
